A grocery care package is one of the most practical gifts you can send to someone in Jamaica. It fills the cupboard, saves a trip to town, and shows you are thinking of them, whether it is a birthday, back-to-school, Christmas, a new baby, a recovery after illness, or simply the end of a hard month. This guide explains how to send a grocery care package to Jamaica step by step: choosing between a ready-made bundle and a custom box, what to put in it, how to add a personal message, and what happens on delivery day.
Care package vs. barrel vs. cash: which makes sense?
Before you start, it helps to know why many families have moved from barrels and remittances to local grocery care packages.
- A barrel is great for clothes and items you already own, but it can take weeks to arrive and needs to be cleared and collected. Food bought abroad often costs more by the time it reaches the cupboard. Our barrel vs online grocery comparison explains this in detail.
- Cash is flexible, but the recipient still has to travel, shop and carry everything home.
- A local grocery care package is bought and packed in Jamaica and delivered to the door, usually within days, with no customs or collection.
Step 1: Decide on a ready-made or custom package
There are two ways to send a care package with Jamaica Online Shop.
Option A: A ready-made care package
Our care packages are pre-built bundles of everyday groceries and household essentials. They are the fastest option: choose the size that fits the household, add to cart and check out. You can still add extra items from the store to the same order.
Option B: Build your own box
If you know exactly what the person likes, build a custom package from all products. This works well when you are sending to someone with specific tastes, dietary needs, or a household with small children.
Step 2: Choose what to put in it
A good grocery care package balances staples that last with a few treats that make it feel like a gift. Here are some ideas by occasion.
The everyday "full cupboard" package
- Rice, flour, cornmeal, sugar and cooking oil
- Tinned mackerel, sardines, corned beef and baked beans
- Coffee, tea, Milo or cocoa, and powdered or long-life milk
- Seasonings: all-purpose, curry, browning, black pepper
- Toilet paper, washing powder, dish soap and bath soap
Back-to-school package
- Breakfast cereals, oats and crackers
- Juice boxes and snacks for lunch bags
- Bread mix or flour for weekend baking
- Toothpaste, soap and lotion for the new term
Christmas or holiday package
- Ingredients for Christmas cake and sorrel
- Rice and peas staples: rice, coconut milk, kidney beans
- Coffee, biscuits and festive treats
- See our Sunday dinner checklist for a full family meal
New baby or recovery package
- Easy meals: soups, oats, porridge mixes and crackers
- Cleaning supplies, toilet paper and laundry detergent
- Drinks and snacks so nobody has to cook every day

Step 3: Add a personal message
A care package feels very different when it comes with a few words from you. At checkout, use the order notes to write a short message, for example: "Happy birthday Mommy, love from Andre and the kids in Brooklyn." We will pass it on when we deliver. Keep it short and clear.
Step 4: Enter the delivery details
Getting this right is the difference between a smooth surprise and a confused phone call.
- Full address with district and parish, plus a landmark such as a church, shop or school.
- The recipient's Jamaican phone number. We call before drop-off to confirm location and timing.
- Is it a surprise? Say so in the notes. We still need to call to arrange delivery, but we will keep the details simple.
- A backup contact if the recipient is often out or hard to reach.
Coverage and timing are explained on our delivery page, and the delivery fee for the address is shown in the cart before you pay. We deliver islandwide, from Kingston and Portmore to St. Ann, Montego Bay and Westmoreland.
Step 5: Pay from wherever you are
Pay by debit or credit card, PayPal, or local bank transfer. You can view prices in USD, CAD, GBP or JMD while you shop, and listed prices already include GCT. If you are sending from overseas, our guides for the USA, Canada and the UK cover the details for each country, and our payment options guide explains PayPal and Pay Later.
Step 6: Delivery day
Once you pay, you get an email confirmation. The package is picked and packed in Jamaica, with chilled items in insulated cold boxes. Our driver calls the recipient before drop-off and delivers to the door. You can follow progress on the order tracking page.
If an item is out of stock, we contact you to agree an alternative or refund that item. If anything arrives damaged, send your order number and photos on WhatsApp +1 (207) 613-5240, ideally within 24 hours of delivery.
How much should a grocery care package cost?
There is no single right amount. A small household may be well served by a modest bundle of staples and toiletries, while a large family with children will need more. The simplest approach is to start with one of our care packages, look at the total in your own currency, and then add or remove items until it feels right. Because listed prices include GCT and the delivery fee is shown in the cart before payment, you always know the full cost before you commit.
Sending to more than one household
At Christmas many people send packages to parents, grandparents and an aunt or godmother in different parishes. The easiest way is to place a separate order for each address, so each package has its own delivery details, phone number and personal message. Keep a short note of who received what, and next year you can repeat or adjust in minutes.
Frequently forgotten items
When people build their own boxes, a few useful items are often left out: matches and candles for power cuts, garbage bags, aluminium foil, baking powder, salt, and a good supply of drinking water or juice. They are cheap, but they make a care package feel complete and save the recipient another trip to the shop.
Tips for a care package they will love
- Ask quietly first. A cousin or neighbour can tell you what is running low without spoiling the surprise.
- Think about storage. A small household may not have freezer space for large chilled orders; lean on dry goods.
- Mind the weight. Delivery to the door means no carrying, so this is the time to send the heavy rice, oil and detergent.
- Time it well. For birthdays and holidays, order a few days ahead, especially for rural districts and busy seasons like December.
- Make it regular. Many senders turn a one-off gift into a monthly package. If you are helping parents, see our guide to buying groceries online for parents in Jamaica.
Can I see that deliveries really arrive?
Yes. Our proof-of-delivery page shows real photos and video from deliveries across Jamaica. It is a good way to reassure yourself before sending your first package.
